On July 2020, an upset former Database Administrator/Biz Analyst wrote a review about his previous work at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on the portal GLASSDOOR:
"A Company that does not follow up its talk with a fitting ‘walk’. Heinemann signals its desire for diversity but how, in this climate, do you rationalize no remedial actions for comments uttered months ago? Examples: A manager who once said of a customer whose credit card did not authorize and she refused to try to resolve: “I’m declaring this customer fraudulent. It has to be. He lives in a hut in Nigeria. I looked it up on Google maps” (A hut in Nigeria cannot be a center for education?) A manager complaining of having to supervise her Asian-Indian employee because “I never can understand ‘them’ ”. (No words could justify…)"
Educational Consultant/Content Specialist (Former Employee) says"Stay as far away from HMH as possible. The do not value their employees and no matter how much experience you have within the company, your job is never secure. Living with that threat constantly over your head was horrible. During one recent purge, older employees with many years with the company were let go, except those that had personal friends at the executive level. Cons: Too many to list"
Sales (Former Employee) says"HMH is a bad company to work for, especially in sales. A bloated executive leadership team is tone deaf to the needs of the field. The restrictions on the sales team from top-down mandates are a chokehold on being able to serve customers and compete with other companies who are not so short sighted. Many hard-working and talented people have left the company because it is not conducive to success. Something is wrong when high quality professionals leave due to the work environment that does not enable success. Cons: See above"

I wish I could say something favorable about HMH my experience with this company was shaded in negativity. Since I left the company after being kick out I have received not a single card asking about my health. I was honored initially to work for HMH but they push me out at age 57 and could’ve cared less about how I was going to survive"

Horrible benefits, medical is insanely expensive and coverage is lacking, 401(k) match is a joke. Work environment is bitter and cut-throat. Interviews (Former Employee) says"Today, I went to a recruitment event. I went because they sent me an email saying that they wanted to interview me. I wasted my whole morning! When it was my turn, the lady looked at my resume and said that I didn't have the required skills... she didn't even ask me any questions, then I asked why did I get the email and her best answer was: "We send the email to everyone.". Also, it was humiliating because the interview was in front of other people and they knew if you didn't pass the first interview, because it was obvious. This is definitely not ethic. Cons: None"

Every day he fed it less and less, and just when he thought he had finally trained the donkey to work with no food at all, it up and died on him! Give your employees a raise. Cons: the management is lazy, blames their failure on their subordinates, hr is a joke"

Content Specialist (Former Employee) says"I was there for 15 years. My first 8 Harcourt years were good. After HM took over, the next 7years were nerve racking. HM was wretched. They harassed you to sell old product and they lied to the employees and the customers."
Workforce Management Assistant/Administrator (Former Employee) says"The regular workers were not treated well. It was always dark in some places. Didn't have supplies like you needed. Management was not really interested in what people had to say. The workers were afraid to speak up."
Content Specialist (Former Employee) says"I loved my job with HMH when I first started. In the end, I loved what I did, but did not appreciate being taken advantage of. Traveling 2 -3 nights a week was fine. Traveling from Sunday to late Friday was a bit extreme week after week. Not to mention, there was no compensation for my overtime or weekends. In 1 1/2 months, I worked 5 weekend days (which equals a week's work) without any compensation financially or a day given back. Manager was extremely unprofessional and an embarrassment around customers. Human Resources was involved and upper management and they chose to look the other way. PEOPLE DON'T LEAVE JOBS, THEY LEAVE PEOPLE. It is a shame, because working with teachers was something I really enjoyed."

Managers are also disorganized and inefficient causing many problems. Management is basically non-existent. Cons: Massive overtime from June through September, managers are inefficient, disorganized."

Sales are made based on profit and necessary the needs of the school. Once a school figures this out it can be very frustrating for all involved. If your manager is poor then good luck!"
Test Development Specialist (Current Employee) says"I'm so sorry I took a job with this company. As a full-time salaried employee I am expected to work 60+ hours a week pretty much every week. There are a lot of contractors here, who don't have to work the overtime. That way management doesn't have to pay the contractors overtime pay. There is an atmosphere of fear, mistrust, and disdain amongst all employees towards management and execs. Company "reorganizes" every 6–9 months and there's always layoffs hanging over our heads. Working here means dealing with chaos and miscommunication on a daily basis. Software used to do my job is outdated, doesn't work much of the time, and very unwieldy. Everyone is micromanaged to the extreme. Employees are treated very poorly and management wonders why morale is so low! Spend a ridiculous amount of time filling out spreadsheets to gather metrics for everything we do. Management pushes and pushes employees to meet ridiculous deadlines and doesn't care about quality. We have to work with a lot of overseas vendors which gets very frustrating at times. Only 2 raises in the last 5 years, and that was only 2%. Constantly under the gun to cut costs while corporate execs spent thousands on a trip to the Kentucky Derby. We're talking about flying them out to Kentucky, hotels, meals, and an exclusive suite at the Derby. All on the company dime. For a company that just came out of bankruptcy that's not responsible spending. Cons: constant layoffs, extremely low morale, no career advancement, long hours, lots of stress, micromanagement, metrics"
Test development (Current Employee) says"If you have noticed that all of the positive reviews here come from temporary contract workers, there is a reason. Being actually embroiled in the company culture teaches you that HMH is a company with no direction. From the mass layoffs to the bankruptcy to the reliance on contract workers to do the majority of the companies work, there is no sense from management that they understand what is going on in educational publishing at the moment, let alone in 3, 5, or 10 years. Cons: You will not be supported, there is no growth potential, and you will probably get several ulcers"

In addition, key operational leaders are unwilling to change processes which makes upgrading business systems impossible."

Employees are downsized constantly regardless of your tenure, sacrifices and contributions to the company. I have seen employees with many years of contributions downsized with just a few hours notice. They are treated like yesterdays newspaper without even providing the decency of able to say goodbye to colleagues and friends. I found this complete lack of respect to provide dignity for in some cases a lifetime of dedication to the company appalling. Severances and outplacement are just monetary - HMH does not have the understanding of how to attract, retain and grow their number one asset - the employee."

Restructured the company and let go some of the highest sales people and managers, you only do that if you are trying to tank the company and get out with some scheme."
